★　猫 (neko) means “cat” and 小判 (koban) is an old gold coin.

★　A similar expression in English is “Pearls before swine.”

★　It means that you shouldn’t offer things to those who are incapable of appreciating them. Cats don’t use money, so there is no point in giving one a gold coin!
