Japanese Expressions: Ittekimasu いってきます – Review Notes

Today we learned two common daily Japanese expressions, Ittekimasu (いってきます) and Itterasshai (いってらっしゃい). We learned that Japanese people use these expressions when they or their family members leave the house.

Number 1:

★　Ittekimasu means “I’m leaving.”

★　Ittekimasu is actually made up of two parts, itte (I’m going) and kimasu (I will come). Therefore, a more full translation might be “I’m leaving, and I will come back.”

★　A more casual way to say it is ittekuru (いってくる).

Number 2:

★　Itterasshai means “Have a safe trip.”

★　Itterasshai literally means, “Go and come back.” The nuance is that they will come home safely, hence “have a safe trip” is the best English translation.

Conclusion:

Ittekimasu and Itterasshai are most often used with family members or people you live with. It doesn’t matter which one is said first, but both expressions are usually exchanged when someone leaves the house.

Although English doesn’t have expressions like these, it is easy to understand the feeling behind these words. Ittekimasu and Itterasshai both have the warm feeling of wishing to return to their loved ones.
