Japanese Kotatsu and こたつねこ

Have you ever seen a こたつ (kotatsu)? They are very popular in Japan in the winter.

A こたつ (kotatsu) is a table with a heating element underneath it. It is covered with a special ふとん (futon) which in this case could be translated as “blanket” that is designed for こたつ (kotatsu).

こたつ (kotatsu) is very comfortable, so it is easy to fall asleep under it. However, it is commonly believed that if you sleep under the こたつ (kotatsu) then you will catch a cold!

Japanese people almost always have a bowl of みかん (mikan – mandarins) on top of their こたつ (kotatsu) (◕ω<)♪
