Mimetic Words are words that mimic sounds, feelings, or senses (learn more)

Today’s mimetic word is だんだん (dandan) which means “gradually” or “little by little”

It can also be written using kanji:which is interesting because means “stairs” or “steps” and  is a kanji that is used to repeat the kanji that comes before it.

shinpai

For example, 私はだんだん心配になってきた (watashi wa dandan shinpai ni nattekita) – “I gradually became worried” or “I gradually started to feel worried.”

心配 (shinpai) means worry”. In this example, the adverbial form心配に

なってくる (natte kuru) is a combination of the verb なる (naru – to become) and くる (kuru – to come) and it means “to start to become~”This example sentence uses なってきた (natte kita) which is the past tense form of なってくる (natte kuru).

naretekita

だんだん慣れてきた (dandan naretekita) – “I got used to it little by little” or “I started to get used to it little by little.”

慣れてくる (naretekuru) is a combination of the verb 慣れる (nareru – to get used to) and くる (kuru – to come) and it means “to start to get used to~” This example sentence uses 慣れてきた (naretekita) which is the past tense form of 慣れてくる (naretekuru).

As is common practice in the Japanese language, the subject of the sentence (I) is omitted in this example.

kurakunattekita

だんだん暗くなってきた (dandan kuraku nattekita) – “It started to get dark” or “It gradually started to become dark outside”

暗い (kurai) means “dark”. In this example, the adverbal form 暗く (kuraku) is used before the verb combination なってくる (nattekuru) which we already learned about in the first example.
