One of the popular 秋 (Aki-Autumn) foods in Japan is 栗 (kuri) or Chestnuts. If you missed our Japanese lesson for the seasons (季節-kisetsu) you can find it here.

There are many kinds of 和菓子 (Wagashi-Japanese sweets) that use , so today we want to introduce you to some of them!

Japanese 栗 (kuri) (◕ω◕)☆

栗まんじゅう (kuri manjū) is a popular kind of 和菓子 (Wagashi). The outside is made of flour, rice powder, and buckwheat. It is filled with あん (an) – sweet bean paste – and 栗 (kuri), either whole or chopped.

栗きんとん (Kuri kinton) is also a kind of 和菓子 (Wagashi). It is made with あん (an) – sweet bean paste – and 栗 (kuri), and is shaped like a 栗 (kuri).

あん栗 (Anguri) is another type of 和菓子 (Wagashi). It is made with あん and(as you can tell from the name!) The outside is coated with sugar!

Another popular Japanese 栗 (kuri) dessert is Mont Blanc – モンブラン (Monburan).

This dessert originally comes from Italy and is popular in France (it means “white mountain” in French), and is made from puréed, sweetened chestnuts topped with whipped cream.
